Abstract:

Introduction: Metacognition is a multi-dimensional concept including knowledge, processes, and strategies for appraisal, monitoring, and control of cognition. The aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between general health and METACOGNITIVE BELIEFS in students.Materials and Methods: One hundred students (44 males and 56 females) were selected from faculty of psychology of Karaj Islamic Azad University using cluster-random sampling. All of the subjects were asked to answer demographic questions and the general health questionnaire (GHQ-28) as well as Wells and Cartwright METACOGNITIVE questionnaire. The data were analyzed by multivariate regression analysis and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: Research findings showed significant positive relationships between METACOGNITIVE BELIEFS and general health. In other words, individuals with higher scores in METACOGNITIVE scale revealed worse general health status. There was also a significant relationship between total scores of both scales and scores on uncontrollability, positive BELIEFS, cognitive confidence and need to control thoughts (P<0.001); however, no significant relationship was seen between those and cognitive self-consciousness score. A person’s score on METACOGNITIVE uncontrollability variable is the best predictor of his or her general health status. Conclusion: METACOGNITIVE BELIEFS are effective factors in general health. Also, it is possible to promote students’ mental health by changing metacognition BELIEFS which enhance maladaptive and negative thinking styles or general negative BELIEFS.

Abstract:

Background: Due to the complex nature and varied symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, different treatments have been used for OCD.Objective: The aim of this study was comparing the efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) and meta-cognitive therapy (MCT) on reducing METACOGNITIVE BELIEFS, fusion BELIEFS, internal stop signals and control/threat BELIEFS.Method: To do so, 6 women with OCD (pure washing), were selected based on the structured clinical interview for DSM-IV (SCID), and were assigned randomly to CBT or MCT group. In each group, patients received the relevant therapies in 12 one-hour sessions. Research tools included Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (OCI-R), stop signals questionnaire (SSQ), thought fusion inventory (TFI) and metacognition questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) that were completed by patients in pretest, posttest, follow up 1 and follow up 2. Finally, data was analyzed both individually and in group. In individual analysis, we used diagrams, visual analysis and calculating the effect size, while in group analysis, the analysis of variance with one between group factor (two group of therapies) and one within group factor (time of tests) was used.Result: The results indicated that METACOGNITIVE therapy was more effective than cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing the METACOGNITIVE BELIEFS, fusion BELIEFS and internal stop signals. However, cognitive-behavioral therapy was more effective than METACOGNITIVE therapy in reducing the control/threat BELIEFS.Conclusion: Considering these results, it can be suggested that overall, METACOGNITIVE therapy is more appropriate for reducing the obsessive symptoms. However, definitive conclusion about the efficacy of these therapies requires more studies.

Abstract:

Background & Aim: Pregnancy anxiety, as well as meta-cognitive BELIEFS and pregnancy-related concerns, are the most common problems among pregnant women. These factors can have serious health consequences for the mother and the baby during pregnancy. Hence, the aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of meta-cognitive therapy on pregnancy anxiety, meta-worry, and meta-cognitive BELIEFS, in pregnant women in Tabriz. Materials & Method: In this quasi-experimental study, a two-group design with pre and post-training was used. The statistical population of this study was pregnant women referred to gynecology and obstetrics centers of Tabriz, which were screened using the Vandenberg Pregnancy Anxiety Scale. 40 pregnant women who obtained high scores on this scale were selected as a sample by the available sampling method and randomly assigned to two groups of 20 participants (experimental and control). For the experimental group, meta-cognitive therapy was performed in 10 sessions of 45-60 minutes in 3 months. Vandenberg Pregnancy Anxiety, Wells Meta-Cognition, and Meta-Worry Questionnaires were used as the evaluation tools in the pretest and post-test. Finally, the data were analyzed by SPSS software version 23 using covariance analysis. Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (P <0. 001). In other words, meta-cognitive therapy significantly reduced the women's Meta-Cognition, Meta-Worry, and Pregnancy Anxiety Scores and improved their health. Conclusion: Meta-cognitive therapy can be used as one of the most effective psychological interventions for the improvement of pregnancy anxiety, meta-worry, and meta-cognitive BELIEFS, in pregnant women.

Abstract:

Metacognition is one of the highest level cognitive processes which have positive association with other cognitive function. On the other hand, it is considered as one of the basic factor in most psychopathological conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate any possible inhibitory or facilitator role of METACOGNITIVE components of worry. In this correlation study, first, 318 high school students were chosen by cluster sampling method from 6 educational regions of Tehran. Then, they were asked to fill in the following questionnaires: Wells & Cartwright – Hatton METACOGNITIVE BELIEFS questionnaire (2004), O' nell & Abedi METACOGNITIVE State questionnaire (1996) and Meyer et al worry questionnaire (1990).Separate sets of correlation and stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that there was a positive correlation between METACOGNITIVE BELIEFS and worry. On the other hand, there was a negative relationship between METACOGNITIVE state and worry. Four METACOGNITIVE components (uncontrollability, self- monitoring, need to control and cognitive competence) predict %46 of variance of worry. It was also shown that uncontrollability, need to control and cognitive competence were positively correlated with worry, whilst self- monitoring was negatively correlated with worry. According to the findings of the present study, METACOGNITIVE BELIEFS and METACOGNITIVE state are both associated with worry in a different way. However, manipulation of METACOGNITIVE components using interventional training would reduce and control worry in worriers.
